After a number of years filming a "Real life Adventure" on the Chathams Islands; film maker Samuel Miller is preparing to premiere his fascinating Documentary "The Wizard & The Commodore - A Real Sea Shanty, Rekohu/Chathams Islands"
The Film which explores the culture and history of the Islands, features a trip to Chatham & Pitt Island by the Wizard of New Zealand on his journey to meet with the self proclaimed Commodore of the Chathams Islands.
The Commodore is a stoic character who lives the dream of Chatham Islands life; He is a central figure on the Islands; and like most on these Islands wouldn't live anywhere else. The Commodore's story is one of many captured in the film, including Crayfishing around South East Island and the old time Sea Shanty's of the location.
Sam Miller also spent time on the renowned Cattle Muster of Pitt Island, where locals move their herds across the Island each Year.
"The Muster is one of New Zealand's great Muster's and is much bigger than I was prepared for. Bringing in those great beasts from the wilds; overlooking South East Island is a rough and special experience unequaled anywhere in the World. We complimented filming the land with scenes in the huge seas out there. The local Captains however told me that the Seas were normal for them, and the rolls weren't bad, just a normal days work; but a day spent hauling Crays around the 44's, the Star Keye's, Maungere, the Castle and the Pyramid is far from what's normal for me or many on the mainland…"
He also says he enjoyed his experience filming out on the Chathams Rise, and has made friends for life, "You won't find a more hardy, but more generous people than the Chathams crew; and I loved every minute; it was a super privilege to get into the lifestyle and live in the place; it's the real New Zealand that we all grew up with, and it has a message for modern New Zealand."
